Gardening

At the end of last summer I purchased two new garden boxes for the new house and waited patiently all fall and winter to put them to use! Last summer was my first summer in 10 years of not having a garden and I missed it!

Even better now is sharing my love with the girls. Avery is at the age where she asks a million questions and is so interested in everything that I think this will be a good learning activity this summer as well. And well Chloe – she will enjoy eating all the veggies (and dirt) I am sure 😉

We had to fill the boxes so we started with a clay base then added back soil and some compost mix. I was not sure how many veggies I could fit into these boxes but we fit a lot more than I thought I could.

I like to do a mix of seeds and plants for a couple reasons. One, they are ready to eat at different times so I do not end up with an abundance of veggies at the same time. Two, some things we do not have a long enough growing season for – well, unless you start them inside which I do not.

So what did we plant? We have strawberries on our deck, a tomato plant that did not fit in the garden, herbs – cilantro, mint and basil, peas, beans, beets, carrots, kale, spinach and lettuce.

A couple days ago we spotted our first little plants coming up in the soil already! Now to keep a certain one year old out of the garden for the next few months…

Weekend Recap

So remind me not to say “we have a quiet weekend and no plans” and jinx it! Our quiet weekend was anything but…

Friday

After a long day and 2 hours at walk in, I am fine, just swimmers ear again – irony of that is that I do not swim but get these infections yearly I did not feel like running but had an interval run on the plan so off I went once Chloe was in bed.

It is never as bad once you are out there running! I came home and we watched Wolverine (I think that was the title – HA) and did not like it at all!

Saturday

We started our day with a market trip:

Then Costco and another grocery store with a pit stop at the Cool Beans bus for coffee and a snack:

We came home, Chloe napped and I did my usual power clean session. After her nap we headed out of town to the nearby city my Grandma lives in and went to a park.

My Grandma made them dandelion necklaces:

We left there and made a pit stop at home before heading back out to Chad’s Dad’s for supper there since his Aunt and Grandma were in town. Chloe was in a crazy mood- what’s new and by the time we left I was exhausted so basically called it a night.

Sunday

We were out by 8:30am for our 14km run:

This was a much better run from last week and the girls did not fight – win!

We spent the new few hours picking up a rug from our deck, having lunch (sushi!) and then more chores, while Avery played outside – she ended up in her bathing suit shortly after this photo:

The rest of the afternoon was spent at a small fair that was set up for the weekend. Since I drive by it on the way home Avery had asked to go but I had not made up my mind until a friend asked us to join them there since their little girl is a couple years older than Avery. It was perfect – they had so much fun!

I think Chloe felt left out 😉

Our weekend wrapped up BBQ’ing supper, hanging out on the deck and of course with ice cream. Chad took this photo and Chloe posed like this – while not at all a flattering photo of me I had to share of Chloe, sums her up these days.

Foodie Friday

That was a whirlwind of a week! I still feel like it should be mid-week, not Friday!

Week highlights:

I went to an Orange Theory Fitness Class. While I liked it a lot more this time I just do not have the extra time for two sessions a week there with Sea Wheeze training which is #1 for workouts right now. I think after the race as my running break I will go and do a month there though.

We had one nice night outside, I love being outside and so do the girls:

Tuesday I had a stage 5 clinger on my hands:

We had a crazy wind and rain storm Wednesday which was also Chad’s birthday. We had family over for cake and that was about it – I felt bad not doing more for him!

Full disclosure, these photos were taken last night since we did not take one Wednesday. Oops.

Onto meal planning. I need some serious motivation here you guys. So please leave your comments on easy and favourite meals!

Saturday – Smokies & Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad – Canadian Living

Sunday – Rainbow Buddah Bowls – Super Healthy Kids

Monday Salmon burgers & The Best Kale Salad – The Balanced Berry

Tuesday – (Crockpot) Souptacular Soup & veggies and hummus

Wednesday – Asian Chicken Wraps & roasted broccoli – Well Plated by Erin

Thursday –  Thai Cashew Chicken & rice – Well Plated by Erin

We have no weekend plans! I have a few things w will probably do but no real agenda 🙂

Long Weekend Recap

I should say extra long weekend since I had four days off 🙂 I took way too many photos this weekend – be warne

Friday

I had the day off work so we started our morning with a run, then got ready and went to my work for lunch since we had a food truck coming by.

We got home by 1pm for Chloe’s nap, she napped and I washed floors and did some cleaning.

Once she was up we went to a greenhouse to get our garden plants:

Then got stuck in a down pour while trying to get groceries. After supper that night Chad and I went to a movie (Guardians of the Galaxy 2) for a date night.

Saturday

We started the day with the first market of the year, then we packed up and headed out to the zoo for the day. We had a ton of fun. It was busy but still seemed okay. Chloe loved it, squealed and clicked (she clicks her tongue at animals for some reason) at all the animals and walked around so happy – even though she missed a nap by 2.5 hours. Avery was being a threeanger for a bit but still came around 😉

We stopped at Village Ice Cream before coming home:

We had a light supper then decided to watch the new Beauty and the Beast with Avery – I think we fell asleep but she did not – HA!

Sunday

Day one of Sea Wheeze training so we did a 12km run which was not the best between us not running double digits for months and the girls fighting – but hey we did it!

My goal for the day was getting my garden boxes ready so we spent the day doing that.

We decided to eat on the deck since it was so nice out – might not have been the best idea since both of the girls were very distracted. We will work on that for this summer 🙂

Oh and Chloe got her first head wound – she fell into the deck:

Monday

Since I skipped making brunch Sunday I made pancakes for breakfast then Chad headed to the gym. The girls and I attempted to paint on the deck which turned into Chloe getting paint everywhere and Avery’s (and mine) OCD kicking into high gear over it.

When Chad got home I headed out for a 30 minute run. It was nice to get out solo!

It was another beautiful day so I made it my mission to stay outside all day. We planted the garden, played in the water table, had lunch outside, played every game we came up with, went to the park, on a bike ride… and got slushes. By 4pm I needed out of the sun!

And that was out long weekend, it was so much fun and I really enjoyed the extra days off with my family.

Foodie Friday

So I totally slacked on photos this week. I took TWO.

A evening run on Monday:

And Chloe’s current favourite hobby, emptying my Ziploc bags out but then she does put them back 😉

I really do not even know what we did all week – HA! But I do know that I am now off for four days!

On an unrelated note, these two photos below are a year old – HOW?!

Onto meal planning:

Saturday – OUT

Sunday –  Bison burgers & grilled BBQ veggies

Monday – Easy Grilled Chicken (Damn Delicious) & Grilled Sweet Potato Salad – Two Peas & Their Pod

Tuesday – Tuna wraps  & garden salad

Wednesday – Skinny Burrito Bowls – Skinny Ms
