The Best Defense

Since summer is here – or at least it feels like it around us these days I thought we would chat more about how we plan to keep our sun safe this summer. Full disclosure first – I used to use tanning beds and never wear sunscreen but as I am older and wiser (HA) now I know better. Plus, I have two little ones to keep sun safe too -and like me they love to be out in the sun!

With kids that just want to run outside as fast as they can I have started to use spray sunscreen more – except on their faces – since it is easy and covers well.

alba BOTANICA Continuous Spray is SPF 50, eco-friendly, 100% vegetarian formula and contains no chemicals, parabens or oxybenzone – plus most of the other nasty “no’s”. PLUS it is water resistant for all those beach and sprinkler days and contains botanicas like Green Tea and Aloe to help keep your skin moisturized.

For Miss.Chloe I use live clean baby mineral sunscreen SPF 45. It keeps babies sensitive skin in mind, it is still easy enough to apply and also non-nano – meaning no small particles can get absorbed into their skin.

And again they contain no harsh chemicals or parabens – so important with little ones!

I am not sure about you guys but sunscreen is the easier part of keeping the little ones safe…The harder part? Keeping those hats and sunglasses on!

But like sunscreen we do not leave home without them – for myself too!

Our summer defense items – sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and water!

This year live clean introduced two new products that I have already used and loved:

A SPF 45 Face Mineral sunscreen and a After Sun 98% Aloe Vera Gel.

Since we have already had summer like weather I have used the After Sun Gel a couple times – still getting used to putting sunscreen on myself 😉 It instantly provided my skin relief from the sunburn and helped to soothe my skin.

All Live Clean sun care products are available at Wal-Mart and Shoppers Drug Mart. alba BOTANICA sunscreens are available at Well.ca and Wal-Mart.

My other sun defense tips?

  • Get a patio and/or portable umbrella (or portable sun shelter) for on the deck, backyard, beach days and more!
  • When planning a beach trip find a spot with shade if at all possible.
  • Limit your time in the sun in the peak hours – usually between lunch and supper time.

The Live Clean and alba BOTANICA products were given to me at no charge, however all opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Weekend Recap

Is it possible that a weekend can leave one so exhausteed yet satisfied? Because that is how I feel these days. We pack a lot into two days since during the week our family fun time is limited.

Friday

Not much exciting to share, I went for a run & Chad assembled our new patio furniture.

Saturday

We swapped our long run for Saturday morning and boy did our legs struggle – we will blame the Friday run and Thursday leg workouts 😉

The girls looking too cute for a run:

We ran 14.5km before calling it quits.

Our afternoon was spent biking just over 15km to a little farm in our city (Sunnybrook for locals). It is easily one of our favourite summer places to visit. We met my Mom, brother and his girlfriend there too.

The animals are all so good with kids, both girls love animals so they were in their element.

After supper Avery and I cleaned up to go to a Peter Pan musical that a youth theater group put on.

I was beyond impressed and will be going to their future shows for sure!

Sunday

We had a semi slow Sunday morning until we headed to the neighbourhood clean up and BBQ. I helped with set-up while Chad and Avery did clean up. It is so awesome to be part of a great neighbourhood that puts these things together. I sit on the community board and love being able to plan these event with like-minded neighbours. We had a bouncy castle for the kids, face painting and the free BBQ.

I only took one photo of Avery’s face painting:

The rest of the day was spent visiting with my brother and his girlfriend, going to get Chloe a helmet and looking at stain for an outdoor project.

And that was our weekend! We have another busy week, Chad has a work event, I am out of town for work one day, have a dentist appointment a work luncheon and Friday we are off work and as long as the weather holds we are heading out on a hike for the day.

Foodie Friday

Hey All! Hope you have had a sunny week. The weather around here had been too good to us (still) so I am hoping that doesn’t mean a not so awesome summer like last year.

Anyways, our week… We had park time, bike rides, I finally got up my gallery wall in the bonus room (it took me a year to gather everything for it) and an evening run.

I am starting to embrace the floral trend more and picked up this dress for $20 this week:

And I also dug out this oldie this week:

We also had an appointment for Miss. Chloe and it looks like we are off all dairy – even lactose free things for a bit to try and rule out a dairy protein intolerance versus lactose. This just means different milk for her (rice milk she loves!) and being extra cautious on the dairy side of things.

Meal planning. Next week is a tad crazy so I tried to keep things easy for us.

Saturday – Blackened Shrimp Tacos – Budget Bytes

Sunday – Chicken Kale Caesar Wraps & roasted broccoli  – Budget Bytes

Monday – Egg Salad sandwiches & sweet potato fries (

Tuesday – Slow Cooker Chicken Noodle Soup & cornbread – Cooking Classy

Wednesday – Pesto Pasta with Tomatoes and Broccoli – ifoodreal

Thursday – OUT

Friday – Pizza – kind undecided 😉

This weekend we are planning a bike ride, a trip to Sunnybrook farm, our long run and a community clean-up and BBQ Sunday – should be a great weekend!
