Shakeology & Vega Thoughts

At first I went to title this post “proteins comparison” or something similar but then I realized that a couple of the items I wanted to talk about are much more than a protein. Remember that since it is key when it comes to these comparisons.

I am affiliated with any of these products. I have used most of them (and will share if I have not) and this information is based on my own thoughts and online research.

I want to start from the start. For years (5 plus) I have used different Vega proteins and supplements. I have always liked the clean list of ingredients and the price was right. I would have a shake after a run or workout 2-4 days a week usually, sometimes just mixed with milk and other times in a smoothie form. While I knew the extra protein and other nutrients were helping me I did not physically feel any different if I had it or not. Then the last couple of years I found that the taste and texture was just not for me any longer, it was too sweet (almost fake tasting) and chalky. I had to hide the protein in smoothies.

Then as most of you almost two months ago I started to use Shakeology. It started off with a few sample packages and then a friend sold me an unused bag for a good deal. I have to say at $5 a serving (one a day) for us Canadians I was VERY hesitant. $5/day is A LOT. But being 30 weeks pregnant with a two year old and working full-time I was ready to try anything to get some energy back and get in extra nutrients that I might be missing.

Today I am using Shakeology 6-7 days a week, usually just mixed with plain almond milk and am pretty darn pleased with it. I did notice a huge change in my energy levels after a week or so of taking it though I do admit now at 35 weeks pregnant I am not noticing the change as much, but then again there is only so much a supplement can do for you when you wake up 4 times a night 😉 The taste and texture is awesome, I have never been able to simply mix a protein with water and milk and drink it, this I can – makes it SO easy to bring to work. I would like to say it has made me crave less sweets but again, I am 35 weeks pregnant – nothing can help that, but I do make a shake instead of having something sweet.

But the BIG QUESTION. Do I intend on continuing Shakeology? The short answer? I do not know. I would love to say yes but going on maternity leave at the end of this month, and a new house I need to see where our finances are. After all, paying bills and buying groceries does come first 😉 We did just order a new Beachbody program and got a good deal with another bag of Shakeology so I intend to cut back on my shakes to make these two bags last me awhile and then we will have to decide. I have to admit that I do get why the price is what it is. Once you look at all the ingredients and what it would cost you to consume all of them on a daily basis it adds up fast.

When I was deciding on if to use Shakeology one thing I did do was compare it with some Vega products. I am sure there are many others that could be compared to but for me it came down to these two brands. This is when I realized and understood the cost difference.

Vega Sport, Vega Proteins & Greens were also compared but I found them to be more of just a protein based shake with very little other vitamins so I did leave them off this chart. Vega One and Shakeology had the closest comparison I could find. As well, I stuck to the main vitamins since if I listed everything this might have been a very long chart!

Notes: Servings are based on a 42g serving of Shakeology and 46g serving of Vega. Percentages are based on a 2,000 calorie daily diet.


Again, I have no affiliation with either company/product and simply am sharing my thoughts, experience and research – which may not be perfect by any means.



My “currently’s”:


Eating – Small amounts every 2 hours! haha. And all the sea salt dark chocolate possible 😉

Drinking – Not mojitos, though i did request a yummy virgin drink for Valentines Day – I have high demands 😉 I have also started drinking Shakeology almost daily and have a ton of thoughts around it that I do need to share soon.


Excited…To decorate the house!  I want to hang all the photos etc now, or well yesterday (poor Chad) and found the perfect entry table last week and am planning a small gallery wall above it.


Wishing…For summer! Okay, spring would do too. It just has hit me that I am not working this summer and get my summer off with my two girls – gah, how lucky am I?! I have been buying both girls all the summer clothes – thank you Old Navy for stealing all my money.


Missing…My usual workouts, long run, headstands, just going all our for a workout. But the time will come when I can work my butt off again, I am ready to sweat!

Reading…Sharp Objects. This is a book that given the time I could read in a weekend, pulls you in and is an easy read.


Thankful…For all my wonderful friends and family and most of all Chad for all the help moving etc. People took the day off work to help us and worked their butts off and I owe them all. Chad has not only worked hard to move but on top of it dealt with my crazy type A, pregnant self…I owe him big time.

Loving…my own tub! At our old house the main bathroom was attached to Avery’s room and had the bathtub SO having a bath after she was in bed was a no-go. Bu now I have one in the ensuite and take advantage every single night!
